Fresh installation of windows 7. Installed messenger 2011 worked for a day then today it wouldn't launch. The process would come up in task manager but nothing would come up on screen. Fresh installation didn't fix it. Then used the repair tool for windows live essentials and it launched but now trying to open up a chat with any of my contacts makes it freeze. I hate this program so much...

Maybe it has something to do with moving the default location of my documents?

No, it's just THAT rubbish now. I use an older version that I found through Google. There's also apps like Pidgin that do a good job.

The new MSN is a cesspit.

Seems like I might have to do the same. Even when it was working on my old installation it was so horribly buggy, I don't understand how Microsoft let it release in such a state...

Rant:

It's an absolute ****ing joke. I left it years ago because it was bloaty, crap, full of features that I didn't need or want (not even A Patch could help). So I found Trillian which runs so much better and is almost instantaneous, though Pigdin's a pretty good use as well.

However I remember that with other chat clients you can't actually add contacts unless you use msn. So having not used it in ages, and uninstalled it when I first loaded up Win 7 I go to find it.

Remembering that it used to disallow people connecting on older versions I try to hunt an offline installer for the latest one. I'm already annoyed thinking that it's a giant package of things now rather than just a chat client, but hey...

I can't find an offline installer, so use the 1.3MB web one. 20 minutes later my hard drive is still going mental, my computer's slowed down to a crawl and I have to reboot (!?!?) even though I only selected to install messenger.

I reboot and it fires up, and I immediately notice it's slower by a long way than Trillian. But not only that but my entire system feels boggy, that's probably psychological though lol...

I then need another reboot. Now everything feels fine but there's still clearly more running than need be. It's heavy in task manager as well.

So I add my contact, and then turn it off and return to Trillian. Very ****ing annoying.

/rant.

The new Windows Live is pretty bad on cpu usage I found on my netbook - 30-50% when sitting there doing nothing! The flash advert was to blame, so used 'apatch' to remove them all and it dropped back to under 5%.

Is there anyway I can stop it making a noise every time I send a message, other than turning off all sound? I found an option so it doesn't make a noise when I get incoming messages when I'm already focused on that window but can't find any options for outgoing message. Why on earth do they think I need informing that I just sent a message, I think I'm quite aware I just sent a message!

I've used msn messenger for years but 2011.. i've finally had enough, it's awful.

Using pidgin now. Just need to work out how to make it run at startup but without the main screen starting.
