Windows Live Messenger shutting down :(

MSN is the best and will always be the best. Inviting all my contacts into the same chat window and watching them all log out from the lag out. Also the A/ S/ L as somebody else already pointed out.

Yea, that's why they logged out. The "lag"... You keep telling yourself that petal. ;)

Yeah, because there is absolutely no call for an IM system that doesn't involve you having to fire up a website.

To be fair even if his Facebook account was full of his friends explaining what works of Shakespeare they'd read today it's still not a credible MSN alternative - its web based for a start, MSN is a standalone application.

Facebook Chat is still quite terrible and the mobile apps don't seem to know when a received message has already been read on another device, meaning it notifies you of it anyway. Very annoying.

That said, everyone I know stopped using MSN over the past couple of years, so I did too. It's a shame though, it was great.

Surely to god you should be using Lync with federation services?

This (afaik) isn't going anywhere, and will still communicate over the WLM protocol to reach other clients like skype, and Windows 8's "messaging" app.

Lync 2013 has only just come out in the last week or two (to RTM), so the backbone of the federated services is going nowhere.

This whole "news" story is just the media blowing it all out of proportion.

It's not my area of 'expertise', nor is it my problem. I guess this will be the most likely candidate for replacement though.

Everyone stopped using it by the time I hit it up at uni about 5 years ago. A few mates had it at uni but we never bothered much with it after first year with facebook and free texts.

Only have about 4 live contacts left on it after everyones old hotmails has been hacked/spammed anyway so it got a little bit pointless to use.

Shame as it was a well refined app, preferred it over skype for webcam, especially from my mac to a pc.

Will always fondly remember the days of the pre nudge msn that was amazing but you can see why they are turning it off as people switching off it like that is the death of the app.

Yeah the people who constantly complain about Facebook and other hugely popular social networks usually haven't really used them to their capabilities anyway. *edit* As Skyfall has pointed out^^

It's like as if people think status updates are a new thing when MSN had status updates right from the start but why would I want to know what song or movie someone is playing every time I look at the contacts list?

Yeah you would argue that status update visibility could be turned off...then again so can Facebook timeline updates.

Pretty surprised that Skype doesn't appear to let you manage who can view your online status. It's all or nothing? You can choose to block people and then unblock them again but it's a bit using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Or is there an option I've missed?

Wow I still use Live Messenger, but yeah in the last few years many of my contacts have moved to IRC, FB and Skype only, what a shame as I prefer the interface of Live Messenger :( This is a end of era as I've been using it since 1999

Don't use MSN that much now, tend to use Steam but you can just use Trillan or similar.

I'd still be using it but a while back some sort of bug appeared and despite several updates it never went away. It would just sit and max out one core of the CPU and cause the entire machine to become sluggish and unresponsive.

I used to use msn messenger all time time. That dull tone to say a contact had signed in... I must admit. It's rare I log into it now. I always preferred the basic clean versions rather than the updated versions windows wanted us it use. The versions where you could drag and drop any file type. It was a great extension to chat rooms which is something I never even think about using now.

The only reason I use WLM now is usually to see if I have e-mails. Hardly anyone I know goes on there now, and I mostly talk to my game playing friends on Steam.

I'm really not a fan of the logging that goes on with Facebook chat, unless I go through and delete everything after each conversation it's going to be there for anyone who goes on my pc. It's also buggy as hell, impossible to ignore those you don't want to talk to due to "seen at x time". I'm not so sure i trust them with my data too, I don't want targeted advertising based on my personal conversations. Last rant point, I have friends from online games who I like to chat to, but don't want to be giving out my identity too.

We still have steam chat I guess (though it lacks features)

Stopped using WLM as well as Hotmail properly around 5 years ago. Both were pretty crap as I remember, Google Talk was/is far better (and still use heavily to this day).
