Hey, I have a desktop for fun stuff, gaming etc, and a laptop for music production.

As anyone here doing music production knows, your system has to be BEAUTIFUL, ultra smooth, you know those mini glitches you get when you do something in a program? Yeah. That's your song glitching live! (I do like glitchcore, but when I am in control)

I downloaded Windows Live Onecare, several bitching issues.

FIRST> I can no longer install Quake Four! ARGH!
Apparently this is because it installs Windows Defender, which ***** with your DLL files in a way that no one I know has figured how to solve yet, only a few bodge jobs that everyone on the forums fight over, each person finding a different way to do it that then ultimately fails..

SECONDLY> Both my computer's are taking WAY longer to boot!
Onecare seems to be running constantly almost?

Basically..

FIRST> Does anyone know about this issue of Defender poisoning my system and how to cure it so I can get back to capping some aliens.

SECOND> What antivirus/general protection would you recommend for minimalistic, CPU friendly protection, preferably free, but if something really is worth forking out for I will consider it..

Thanks guys, really could do with advice from some people who know what they're talking about!

Ah.. Thanks guys, I'll definately look into this NOD32.. I have a brand new netgear router and am on a Uni network, ok?

Do i NEED windows defender, really? Isn't it just about crap like phishing? Surely phishing is something that affects noobs and not us?

I'm really not sure on these so I could be way out, but thanks guys.

ok, i have not used a anti virus app for 2 years, i don't need too i know my habits and im experienced enough to know what not to do.

there are a few things i do on a fresh install.

1. get behind a router

2. update windows

3 install Firefox

4. get me a new hosts file from here http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

{ read what this is for its very very useful }

5. install site advisor plug in for firefox { brilliant plug in }

after all that i feel that i am as secure as i can be, the rest is down to my behavior.

just don't open attachments that you don't expect, and beware of suspicious website { site advisor helps a lot with that }.

apart form that i find you can have a lot on your system and still use apps like cubase and reason like i do, and still own a very stable system.

i have not had spy ware or viruses for about 2 years, i give up scanning.

Ahhh.. Thanks, some good advice!

I must confess I do occassionally drop by the odd serial website etc, so if I keep my desktop with a decent virus guard and be naughty on their, but keep my laptop mint clean and only go to decent sites (some of my obsessive friends point blank refuse to let an RJ45 touch their music laptop in its lifetime).

Is firefox REALLY that much safe than IE7?

Thanks, some good stuff guys

anyone with defender installed should disable the real-time file scanning, having it enabled has a serious speed effect on file accessing

Shhh.. Expletives are a dynamic component of the English language and something entirely appropriate when used to reference anything concerning Microsoft Corporations..

Not when it's against the rules of the forum:

you might need to be extra careful since you're on a uni network - I heard of people when I was in halls last year loosing a lot of work because someone else on their subnet had a pretty unsecure PC or something.
