Windows loads to desktop, then the computer restarts

I boot Windows XP and the desktop shows for a few seconds. I'm able to move my mouse, even open Task Manager, but suddenly the computer restarts with no warning, and no error message when I boot up again.

I haven't changed any software or hardware (I've been on holiday for three weeks) and the only person to use the machine was my brother who would only do internet stuff.

It is completely stable in safe mode. I've tried setting the BIOS to defaults, but that hasn't helped.

Any ideas? This is a huge bummer as I've been waiting to get back on my machine after having to put up with a netbook for weeks! Thanks in advance.

The machine:

4200 AM2 X2
M2N32SLI
2gb 800mhz OCZ RAM
320gb Seagate HD (the one the windows install is on)
500gb Seagate HD (data and a Xubuntu partition)

Just about the same point each time, but I can't see how anything could be overheating - the CPU was at 30C and I don't expect the other components were much above that. It's a valid line of inquiry though, so I'll try and check the temps next time I'm in, if I have long enough.

Hangs or just takes a while? leave it 'hanging' for an hour to make sure, have seen safe mode take over an hour to boot before now due to issues.
I left it for about 2hrs (when I watched Barca dismantle Bayern) and there was no progress. Giving it another shot now.

Something like ERD commander or BartPE will allow you to explore your windows installation and make the necessary changes to the files. Its like a linux live cd that boots into an XP-like GUI. I think its easier to get hold of BartPE than ERD though (legally).

Download either image, burn it, boot from it and use the file explorer utility like you would in XP. I think the BartPE explorer is called A43 File management utility.

I'll try that. Fortunately I've got a another machine to burn CDs etc with.

Thanks again for the quick responses. This is such a hassle.

FIXED IT! I think...I deleted Amon.sys in ERD Commander and I'm in the machine now. I guess NOD32 updated and got weird or something? I'm going to uninstall it and run the comodo package until I figure out what was wrong with NOD32 and can trust it again.

Great stuff, guys.
