A friend has just been in touch, his PC seems to have assigned itself a windows log on account (i thinks its administrator).

thing is, he hasnt assigned this himself and has no idea what his PC has set the log on password to by default. All he's said was it shut down as if logging of from a work network last night and since then has been requesting this admin account password, in normal and safe mode

Hes trying to avoid re installing windows (xp SP2), so has anyone had this prob before and know what the likley passowrd might be

used password, admin and adminstrator so far with no joy

Did he install the copy of windows? Usually you specify an administrator password then. If it's a pre-installed copy then he needs to find the documentation he got with the PC, or contact who he bought it from!

If he bought it from someone else try them. If not, sounds bizarre but have you tried it with no password whatsoever like niko suggests? There is also a password recover software used by network administrators that I have seen posted on the forum several times, if I can find the page about it or if someone else does, you can give that a try.

to disable this once he gets into his computer, go to start -> run -> and type in "control userpasswords2" to disable user accounts...

It's a feature of windows I really hate...
