Windows/MAC and possibly Linux - instant messenger?

What's the best one available right now, free or otherwise, that will allow messaging between these platforms?

Does it support webcams for video chat etc?

I remember there being a plugin being developed a while back but not sure if it got anywhere or whether it was compatible with msn messenger. Youl have to have a play with it. Sorry.

I was going to mention Gaim but then I thought it didn't run on MacOS. So I checked the site and apparently it does, woot.

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#q10 for proof, it seems you have to get a bit manual with the MacOS install though.

bah i tried amsn and found it very poor indeed. go with gaim, that is more user friendly and looks nicer

Gaim is very nice for Windows and Linux; it's what I use on both platforms for both MSN and AIM. For OS X I'd use Adium. It's the GAIM codebase with a better GUI made especially for the OS X environment.

IMO i'd put Skype right up there, since it has a client for all OSs and you can talk/use video on a Mac which is a plus
