Windows Mail... question

hello chaps, i have a qestion for anyone who knows about standard windows live mail in Vista/seven.

I have a friend who's pc is in a bad way, i tried for hours to bring back the speed but its clogged and errored badly. i can only see a reinstall as the way fwd.

however he uses windows live mail (the outlook type one) and i wondering how the best way to proceed is, he has lots of saved emails and folders, and its vital i mirror that when i rebuild his pc, any advise on this would be great

Copy the store folder, when re-installed, copy it back into place.

Export > format > Import.

To be fair it should be configured using imap these days. That means no loss of email. Pain in the bum this local data storage is!

who is the email provider? if it's a hotmail account, all the mail should still be on the server. sames goes for gmail which should default to using IMAP.

if it's their isp mail, it might be pop3 meaning all messages are saved locally. if that's the case, this should help...

i think the main issue is from what i saw today he had created about 30 folders, and places all mail into those folders, i know how to add his email account back on, but i need to make sure it keeps his folders ect ect

Also bear in mind that Windows Mail in Vista is not the same as Windows Lice Mail installed on Vista 7 8 etc so make sure you grab the right store folder.

ok not having a mail account infront of me, can anyone point me in the right direction of the "store" folder?

If you look in the maintenance options it'll tell you exactly where it is, I think it's Tools Menu > Options > Advanced Tab > Maintenance Button > Store Folder Button, it's certainly something like that.

C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders

Assuming Windows Mail and not Live Mail

e: AppData is hidden by default iirc
