I bought Windows MCE 2005 and when I right click on My Computer it says...

Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

And when I try and run the Update Rollup 2 that came with it, it says "This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005".

You usually get that message when trying to bodge MCE into an existing install rather than doing a fresh installation.

You can just rename the Update Rollup 2 .exe as .rar, extract all the files, run them in the order suggested in one of the ini files (i think), and all will be well.

If it really is a proper MCE installation, it really shouldn't be saying that.

I found the problem - and it's my fault!

Basically I used to have XP Home and had XP SP2 on my data disk which I always used to install first thing after doing a fresh XP install.

So when I bought MCE and did a fresh install of that, out of habit I ran the XP SP2 installer - it didn't complain and let me install it. I ran my OS like this for ages - it's only because I have been trying to get it talking to the 360 without any luck that I looked into it.

Looks like that by running SP2 it overwrote some MCE files with XP files - so after that the OS thought it was XP and not MCE.

Fixed by doing a fresh install of MCE, followed by installing Rollup Update 2 (and deleting the old SP2 exe from my data drive!). Now the 360 works fine, streaming video from the PC! :D
