Hi,

I have a friend who is still running Windows ME.

He has recently just started having problems with his broadband connection. He is on Orange Broadband and using a speedtouch 330 modem.

He is unable to access any websites. He can get to Google, but any link from Google = nothing - Page cannot be displayed.

I have brought the computer come and linked to my router - All works fine.

Any ideas? I have even tried reinstalling the speedtouch software. I have taken my laptop to his house and cannoted the modem to my laptop. All works fine on that too.....

Thanks

the best advice is to tell your friend to dump ME and get a real os either downgrade to win98 se or XP.

If you don't mind spending a little money before the OS re-install route (and good for the future really) buy a Netgear DG834G.

It's an ADSL2+ 54g Wireless Modem Router, much better than the average USB Speedtouch 330.

Connect via ethernet (usb to ethernet or PCI ethernet card may be needed on a system of this age, check the ports, wireless route - USB or PCI wireless card (802.11b/g 54g).

I am blabering on here. Basically get yourself a proper modem router (Netgear DG834 (Wired) / DG834G Wireless) and go via ethernet or wireless, use belkin products for this part as they have better support for Windows ME on the whole - check the system requirements before buying though to be sure. Stick with Netgear for the modem router though.

Worth the £50 - £70 to test this I think. If it works, great, if not, go with the format / re-install option with XP, you will have a good network setup now going forwards with the new equiptment so it's money well invested, worst case, in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

EDIT:

I have brought the computer come and linked to my router - All works fine.

After re-reading (it must be the heat), my suggestions may not be the best route. Let me re-think for a minute

OK, I have had a ponder, and I still think my initial response stands bar the fault thoughts, I have edited those out after re-reading.

Give it a go if you like. Also, try removing all security / network software (not the adapter drivers mind), install ie7 and reset it's settings from the options menu, install firefox, install latest drivers from speedtouch's website and have Orange Broadband username and password to hand for after the install. Use the preceding in whichever order suits.

A few things to try. Good luck!
