Right I got my first random call for a PC support - HOORAH!!!

However it's a bugger of a call!

So need some advice.

Basically she has a Windows ME machine that a friend has possibly installe some viruses or spyware by accident.

What software is good for ME?

Yeah I know how bad ME is :(

Unfortunately from the chat on the phone I had with her, I think she is unlikely to want to buy XP as she said her friend was getting her a "copy" of sage too that she would like installing, unless I had a copy she could have....errrr no that's just wrong love :S

Guess I will have to have a good look round for ME updates :(

Tell her there is nothing you can do because she is 1) using an unsupported operating system which needs upgrading and 2) shes running an illegal operating system which you refuse to work on.

Tell her to install XP Home is the only way. It's only £50.

Yeah refusing to help people because of their OS is going to make me a millionaire....lol

Anyways got a call from her yesterday saying she had got sick and tired of the machine crashing and had gone and bought a brand new XP machine, but she still wanted me to come round and set it up and copy her files and programs accross.

WOOO HOOO!!!

Sweet, was there an hour and 20 mins and all sorted, she paid me and even gave me a bottle of wine :)

You know, it may be a hard decision, and cost you a little revenue in the short term, but you should consider whether its a smart move to build your new business whilst turning a blind eye to the legality of copying ripped off software.

Sure, the odd copy might not hurt anyone, and loads of this goes on, but once you are down that slope its only a short slip to more proactive distribution and before you know it you are being relied on to provide a ripped off copy of this and a ripped off copy of that.

Cleaning up your business later will lose you even more custom, and not doing so will eventually land you in court. Not much cop for a friendly family business?

Errr? what?

What do you think I did that was illegal?

It is a brand new PC she bought with Windows XP on it and then I loaded her files and software on :S

Sorry but you lost me here, I certainly would never do anything illegal on a clients machine it just isnt work the risk.

If your asking for this kind of advice you shouldnt be opening a support line.

Sorry I have to disagree again, I have worked in IT support for 10 years, however most of my time now is spent on NT based systems, such as 2k, XP etc.

So I was asking which utils people were aware of that ran well with ME and where to get updates as I was having problems finding them on the web (turns out you can't get them from the web).

Thanks guys.

I did say when I went round last night, that if she had kept the ME machine and not gone for XP (or other) that I would have had real problems with fixing the PC and would have advised her to upgrade anyways.
