How does windows media center work?

Is it a whole operating system or just a program i install over XP installed atm?

I really dont wanna format my whole pc just to install WMC...

It's integrated into Windows XP Media Centre edition and Vista, I'm not sure you can download it and install it onto xp unless you have those versions. Altho do correct me if I'm wrong.

it's just an application that runs within windows

you'll need to install a fresh OS to get it..

yup in order to get it you'll need to install that version of XP or get a copy of Vista

If you are thinking of buying an upgrade to get mediacentre I would hold on a short while as the windows 7 version if far better then the XP or the Vista version. I have been using the windows 7 version since Beta and it is great!
