If I use the windows10 usb media creation tool will it download the latest version of windows 10, the one that allows me to use a legit windows 7 key to activate windows 10 rather than having to install and activate window 7 first, or will I still have to install windows 7 and activate it first ?

You should be able to use your Windows 7 key just fine so long as it's the November Update (build 1511) that you're using.

Yes I know that, but the question is will the media creation tool download build 1511 or an earlier build ?

Sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone know if after upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, you can then extract the key and use it if you have to do a clean install with the Windows 10 media? Thanks

Thanks. I mean if I wanted to wipe my SSD right now (which had Windows 7 on it to start with) could I then simply install Windows 10 with no upgrade faff and activate using the key I extract from my new Windows 10 install?

once again.

do the upgrade from W7 to W10
create bootable W10 USB
do clean install of W10, whenever asked for serial, just skip
W10 will be activated automatically

I was concerned about the need for a key on my W7 laptop that has been upgraded to W10 now that I am to do a clean install, but I will proceed in this manner.
