I have heard tales in my travels of programs that load in windows full screen, and if you point them to all your (back up) films and music etc it will dsplay them in a nice pretty list thats nicer to read on long way away screens that normal windows.

Basically thats what I am after. Got a pc that acts as a tele atm, with my (backed up) music, films episodes etc on it, and I was a nice easy way to controll and play them via a program.

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, or download the free evaluation copy of Windows Vista RC1.

There are other free alternatives, but I've never liked any of them really.

Just got hold of Vista RC1, but putting off installing it, cause I heard you cant have xp next to it unless you install xp afterwards

It's probably the other way round. - you'd need XP installed first before attempting a Vista install. I'm sure it's possible to install it th other way round, but it certainly wouldn't be fun.

Media Portal, just went back to it and it's much better than the MC built-in front end. ffwd and rewd now works, and I can now browse my music by folder and not by MP tag database which is slow as hell and limited to sound formats (need MP plugins to force MP playback)

What? Yes you can! Just create an empty partition (say about 16GB) & install it from boot-up (not in Windows). In XP, make sure you install this excellent program in case you want to remove Vista ;)

Re: Media Portal
hmm depending on how customisable (and its open source so its fine) this is, I will give it a go

Re: Vista.
Ok I'll try it out then, thnx

Sorry, must have misunderstood this:

It will do everything else you want aswell though... MCE will probably be better if you don't want any tv functionality though.
