Windows network shares.. slow?

The share is located on my 2012 server and patched into my home network via gigabit. The client is connected via wireless n which can achieve real world transfer speeds of about 14MB/s. I've got the network share which is mounted as a drive letter D on a Windows 8 client. Browsing the directories is fine, and it feels like a local drive, copying data via explorer is fine and copies at a speed expected for wireless transfers. Pings to the server are <1ms.

The issue is whenever I open a file directly on the share it crawls and takes between 10's of seconds for small files, pictures, word docs etc going up to minutes for video files. In the case of video files when it finally opens the video isn't even playable, just stuttering and displays behavior like buffering. While this is going on directory browsing of the share slows down to a crawl as well. I've had a look at the following KB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829700), but it didn't seem to help and only made matters worse (everything was the same but directory browsing was now slow all the time)

Any suggestions on being able to fix this sharing issue?

Figured it out >_>, it was because my course mate was messing around the other day with vSwitches and bridging. Some of it was left active and ruining my network somehow *facepalm* . Thanks bledd, I wouldn't have poked around the adapters without that suggestion!
