Windows never loads, reboots over and over...

Right basically this is what i can only think of as my last suggestion

This thread describes your problem and how users fixed it: http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/21602.html I got the idea that you may need to update your graphics drivers, possibly firmware too, i mean for ALL components.

Microsoft says: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324764 But then you may already have read that.

Hope that helps somewhat! :)

EDIT: can you try a different graphics card? This would force a different video driver, then that would prove if it was the agp440 causing the fault

Soz 'bout the double post, but taking a look @: http://www.sandpile.org/post/msgs/20005308.htm
And
http://ianwij.com/weblog/archive/2006/05/21/3320.aspx

Suggests that maybe another device could be causing the non bootup, even if the device is completely unconnected to the problem, try taking your devices out and try a bootup each time, start with your USB devices, then cd writer, soundcard etc etc and see if you can get windows to load. If it works then try and update the drivers for problem device.

Thanks for all the help guys, but it looks like this has got the best of me. I've been trying to crack this since Friday but I'm just going round and round in circles. I can't believe I can't solve it!!

In review of the recent links I spent anothe couple of hours trying to solve the issue but never got anywhere. This included changing the graphics card, disconnecting pretty much everything except the bare necessities, running chkdsk from the recovery module, upgrading motherboard bios and so on...

If anyone has any ideas, feel free to suggest them, but I've pretty much given up. Looks like I'll have to order a shiny new hard disk tomorrow and finish the backup procedure before starting from scratch.

On the plus side, I do feel like building a new computer again... :D

Just a quick FYI...

I did a fresh install on top of the existing Windows installation and the problem dissapeared. I've lost everything (software installations, configurations, etc) except for the actual data itself and will have to start installing programs and putting all the pieces together again, but I'm thankful that I never lost any of my valuable files.

When my new hard disk arrives, I'll set everything up fresh on that and use my current hard disk to store all files and data from now on so it's seperate and much more reliable than having everything on the same disk. I'm also going to start doing regular off-site backups now just to be on the safe side. I've learnt my lesson now! ;)

Thanks for all the help guys! It would have been nice if I could have fixed this but I guess you can't win everything. At least I'm getting a cool Seagate Barracuda 320GB SATA-II out of all this. Perhaps it might even be a good time to look at a new mobo for this computer? hehe...

All this points to registry corruption. Only failsafe way out of that is either by hacking the registry (if you know your stuff) or restore from backup.

If you run your business from it, invest in something like Acronis True image and an external USB2 hard disk. Back up to it frequently and make sure you store the external HDD away from your PC when not in use.

lol damn right!! It's addictive by nature ;)

Sry to come in so late into this, but I can't believe nobody mentioned trying to boot in safe mode! Perhaps it wouldn't have worked anyway, but it's the first thing I would try. Following that, sometimes a CMOS reset can fix strange problems like this.

Trying these things is free, takes very little time, and solves a great deal of simple problems.

Glad you got it sorted anyway :D

Thanks for chiming in guys.

You won't believe this, but after reinstalling XP with SP2 I attempted to set up my wireless internet. I'm using a Netgear MA111 USB adapter to connect to the network. After installing the software for the adapter I restarted the computer and plugged it in, only to find that as soon as it detected the hardware and set up the drivers the computer restarted... and the same problem started all over again!

So there you go, that seems to be the culprit. I know this because if I unplug the USB adapter Windows loads just fine, and if I plug it in it will reboot continuously until I disconnect it. The solution is as simple as downloading the latest software for the adapter from Netgear's site. It seem that SP2 and the original Netgear software don't mix.

But here's what's strange... if my memory serves me correctly, I did NOT have SP2 installed when this problem started, so there shouldn't have been any conflicts. And what's more, I'm sure I DID disconnect all my USB gadgets from my computer when I was trying to solve the problem the first time around. So now I don't know what to think!

I guess it's just one of those things! :D
