My cousin's pc no longer boots windows as he has a corrupt file in the system32 directory. Unfortunately i don't have the pc with me and he's away for a few days but i was wondering if there's a way to sort this out short of reformatting?

I've plugged his hard disk into my computer (i used my windows disk too) and managed to salvage all his important files etc. I also ran a full virus scan on his disk which found a couple of things but nothing major iirc. When booting, it said that his disk needed to be checked for consistancy/errors and proceeded to scan the disk. I had hoped that this would fix it, but alas, plugged the disk back into his pc a couple of days ago and the problem remains.

It says i could use the windows cd to repair the installation...but when i've attempted windows repairs in the past i haven't faired well. Any ideas? thanks.

yes it's a win xp system. I think he probably has system restore on tbh. How do i go about doing it?

sorry i can't give any more info, as i said he's away but i promised i'd do my best to fix it when he gets back.
