Windows, not doing much?

Hi Guys,

Just got my second HP G70 laptop, as the previous one had a very noisy fan.

I've just booted for the first time, it's checks the time, location etc and I've entered a password.

Anyway, it won't progress into the desk top, it just stays blank? The screensaver is kicking in so windows is doing something and I can get into task manager!

Any ideas?

Thanks Embarassingly I don't know how to get into safe mode?

Shame realy 'cos there's a nice simple elegance to these...
