Randomly my fiances Dell laptop has decided not to boot into Windows. when the logon sscreen is meant to show, its just a black screen with the mouse cursor. Windows will boot into safe mode okay, at which point ive tried system restore but once that process completes and the system restarts the original issue still occours.

Its a software issue as safe mode works, but not sure what. any ideas?

System spec:
Dell Studio 15
Win 7 64bit Home Premium

have the original windows dvd? put it in the drive and choose to boot from dvd if it lets you access boot menu at start/bios

then you can try and do a start up repair to fix start up problems

Ill give that a go tonight, thanks :)

If startup repair doesn't work (it never works to be honest) then from the repair options on the Windows DVD use the command line with the following:

chkdsk /r C:

This is the disk checking utility and could take up to an hour.

Startup Repair couldn't detect any problems

I've re-run System Restore from the console to an even earlier time and then without restarting into windows i'm now running check disk in the command prompt of the recovery console just to be sure

will report back when finished
