I know its possible to install Windows on a Mac, but can anyone tell me if by doing so you have the exact same functionality as you would with a windows based PC?

Basically I need to install some software that isnt available on a Mac OS and also install log me in.

Does it just set up as dual boot?

Thanks

Yes. It doesn't run any slower either because it runs natively.

If you go to Applications > Utilities > Boot Camp you just follow the wizard and insert your Windows install disc when it prompts you.

Just to confuse you even futher, you can install Windows inside a VM (virtual machine) if you don't want to reboot to change operating systems. That's another story entirely.

Thanks for the reply and the info.

The VM version sounds great but it wont be used by myself but instead by someone with almost zero IT knowledge. Dual booting is going to be hard enough to....

Do you need a specific Windows for Mac or can any Windows disc do?

Also, is vista the best choice to go with given that W7 has just come out?

Go with W7. Its better than Vista. And much much better than XP. I take it they want the looks of a mac, but without the OS?

They bought a "computer" and when I arrived to install the software as I walked in the door I saw a nice shiney Mac on the desk so might as well have turned around!!

The guy who bought it wasnt too happy that he had been "misold" but is stuck with it now.

Obviously Im not bashing Macs but he REALLY needed a PC for his business critical software!!

Why not use VMWare fusion as you can then boot windows applications from OS X.

Might take a while longer to start but at least you don't have to restart from one OS to another?

Dual booting requires you to hold a button on startup. That's it.

You can use ANY Windows disc. The boot camp installer configures your drivers automagically, so it's a 50 minute job to install Windows.

I'd go with W7 as it's a lot faster than Vista.

Take it back to be honest. Waste of money if he hangs on to it.

Sadly hes had it a month or so before I knew anything about it, he had been running the software in question on an older machine which is on its last legs hence the upgrade
