I bought an Gigabyte Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 and 2 sticks of ram Corsair vengeange 2x4 1600 8gb. Everything is instaled nicely in sticks 1/2, procesor runs fine (amd fx 4100) but windows says i have 6gbs or ram when i should have 8gb, not only that problem, windows says only 3.99gb are usable wich is stupid. Ive been in several forums and done full research, nothing on BIOS says anything about the ram, just some voltage configuratin and i dont know how to mess whit that, if anyone can help me il be gratefull.

My build for your information

Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3
amd fx 4100
Corsair vengeance 8gb 1600
western digital caviar blue 500 gb
Gtx 750ti sc 2gb evga
PSU 400w Coolermaster
Case, unknown just some generic one

This should probably be in the General Harware subforum, but I'm sure it'll get moved.

To get the obvious out of the way first, I assume you're using an x64 Windows?

Thread title says BIOS is only recognising 6GB RAM.

Possibly causes:

(1) Faulty RAM stick
(2) Too many banks of RAM leading to one bank not being recognised.
(3) RAM not seated in slot properly
(4) Incompatible RAM

As for only 4GB in Windows then yes, you probably need to install 64bit OS.

First things first, I'd update your BIOS to the latest version.

That might fix it, or if not you've then eliminated that possibility. After that, check each RAM stick 1 at a time.

sounds like a OS issue, first thing I would check and easiest is to see what version of the OS you have as it sounds like its 32bit.

4GB is the max a 32 bit OS can use. you will need a 64 bit os to use\ see all the ram in windows

First confirm in System properties whether you have 32bit or 64bit windows.
Then check the BIOS and see if there is a setting which allocates RAM to the integrated GPU on the AMD FX4100 as this could be where the missing RAM is.

I don't understand how the BIOS is only seeing 6gb, when you're running 2x4gb. I could understand 4x2gb, if one was faulty it would see 6gb.

I would have thought that even if the onboard GPU is being used, and allocated a set amount of RAM, the BIOS would still show 8gb system total.

I've never even heard of a RAM module going faulty and only half of it working. They normally work or they don't.
