I've bought those £10 keys from key sites for new builds for awhile and only if I upgrade the motherboard have I had to buy a new key. But now all I changed in the system was the cpu and gpu and it's stating I need a new key, anyone one know what the criteria is?

Have you tried activating it again through Windows? If you have signed in through your MS account then the key should be attached to your account, making the activation with just a few clicks.

I had this during the year when I upgraded my CPU from 13900KF to 14900KS. Motherboard changes trigger the activation process but it seems CPU changes does too.
