Hi all,

I felt this would be more suitable in here than in the mobile phone section..?

My organisation has recently made the decision for Windows 8.1 phones to replace the existing Blackberrys.
I've been presented with this project and the timescale provided is typically very imminent, we are talking about 200 Lumia 625 phones in total.

Of course, Windows Phone 8.1 is a completely new concept to myself although I'm familiar with ios devices in enterprise and MDM solutions (I use Meraki (no windows phone support) currently for iPads/iPhones).

I've recently implemented System Center 2012 R2 so would consider using Active Sync for emails and the Intune connector for device configuration, what experiences have others had with this and how does it compare with the likes of Airwatch / Ironguard etc?

Also, I'm struggling to determine:
1. Is a Company App absolutely vital? (I would use it for Lync 2013 and perhaps future apps I develop).
2. How would I image the devices? the devices typically come from EE/vodafone branded with their applications (Angry Birds pre-installed.. and Nokia bloaty apps), Is it possible to set one up how I would like then replicate onto the others? (for iOS I created icloud images and then synced to the device.. , this is acceptable for the small business)
3. MDM costs, is Intune/SCCM management actually cheaper all things considered? (advantage of airwatch being that its web based etc).

Microsoft have been in direct contact with myself regarding this, but I sense that they know I don't fully understand the in's/outs and although our CAL package includes most products I don't want to purchase stuff we won't need.

Any guidance / experience on similar enrollments would be greatly appreciated!

I'd get away from this idea of "imaging". These aren't PCs, you need to stop thinking of them like PCs.

If you don't want people to have access to certain apps or want to reduce the clutter of the preinstalled stuff then you should be setting MDM policies to remove or hide those apps.

All MDM is broadly similar because it needs to hook into the MDM APIs exposed by each platform, I've only had experience with MaaS360 and Casper but they both did the job. Casper is more Apple-management than MDM but works great for a fleet of iPhones.

As far as I know Apple are still the only people who have a Volume Purchase Programme in place for paid apps. Why nobody else has jumped on this I have no idea, it's pretty much ruined the chances of anything other than iOS being deployed in a lot of the places I've worked with.

Windows phone, pile of crap. Hope you have a well man help desk, they will be flooded with calls from disgruntled users.

We are forced to use them and I have not heard from anyone who has not had issues!

Date resetting, not powering on and bug ridden apps to name a few.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm currently trialing some of the workplace features and intune connector components; it does not appear to be very intuitive at all; I can see us potentially using AirWatch, I'm also currently trying the Miradore MDM which is free for Nokias.

Hi,

sorry to drag this thread up but what did you go with in the end? Our organisation is thinking the same thing, move away from blackberry to Windows phones.

We've purchased approximately 200 Lumia 625's which I think will be regretted later on but decision wasn't made by me.

Managing them with Airwatch, but Airwatch rather embarrassingly are failing to show any kind of in depth knowledge with windows phones (iOS and Android, they appear to be fluent with) to enable them to be utilised fully. Deployment is going to be a pain as the apps can't be distributed (even from an MDM) without an account created for each user and they aren't as customiseable out of the box, even with MDM restrictions in place.

Airwatch is shocking.

The only decent WP MDM at the moment is Citrix if your wanting app delivery as well.

If you just want MDM without bells and whistles, InTune.
