windows problem, gone taskbar/icons

There's a problem with my mate's laptops, it's been restarting on its own for the past few days and now, when he turns it on, the taskbar and desktop icons appears for about a few seconds then completely dissappears, just the cursor and wallpaper is visible. Ctrl alt del doesn't bring up the task manager.

So I restarted on safe mode and ran virus/spyware checks but came up with nothing. Used hijackthis also to remove a few spyware but the problem won't go away.

I can only suggest doing a Windows repair. I've no idea why ctrl -alt - delete isn't working.

Also, is your mate using Norton Anti Virus? Doing a search, ive noticed quite a few people relating this problem to Norton.

Nope, he doesn't have Norton, only AVG.
