I downloaded something, which I'm guessing contained a virus or something.

When I login to windows, I don't see my desktop and only a black cmd window

I don't have any system restore points and struggling to find my windows disc.

Can I do any type of repair or anything via cmd? As that's the only thing showing... I typed msconfig via cmd and that has booted up another screen, but unsure the best root to fix things

Thanks

What makes you think it's malware?

If it was me, I wouldn't even try to fix the problem with a scan. Always fresh install windows upon infection.

If you have data you want to save then download a Linux distro (ubuntu will do) burn it to disc.

Boot from the disc as a live disc (Don't install it). This will get you to the desktop. From there you can copy the data you need to save onto an external hard drive.

Once that's done, reinstall windows as a clean install.

(Scan files on hard drive for malware)

Is this Windows 10 and are you sure its malware as above? - I've had this kind of thing happen several times since 1706 update for Windows 10 :( - in my case it let me open task manager so I restarted holding down shift to get recovery options and went from there.
