windows product key version info????

Is there any way to find out from a windows product key which version of windows it is for?? I have a laptop at work which has the windows certificate of authenticity on it with the product key, but not which version of windows (either win 98SE or 2000 pro) it is for. It is a few years old and has been used a lot so some of the writing on the label has faded. I need to find out for auditing purposes which version on windows we have licence for on this laptop.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance guys :)
 
post a picture of the label, 98 differs slightly to 2000/xp i think

-scrub out the key obviously :)

there's no way of checking using a pc i don't think.. (besides fully testing it)
 
the laptop has win 2000 pro on it, what i need to know is if it has the licence for it or not if you get what i mean????
