Hi there,

Got a laptop with Vista home premium 32b on it, i bought the lappy 2nd hand and even though it was factory reset when delivered i feel it is in need of a clean sweep.

I've got another desktop with vista 64b business on it and was wondering if i could use the install disc from the desktop on the laptop and reuse the laptop serial number?

I know 32b and 64b swapping doesn't matter as long as you've got the right disc, but swapping versions i guess is a problem, i don't even know if its down or upgrade on versions.

I'm guessing its a long shot but thought it was worth the ask.

if i remember correctly the Vista disks contain the same version of software its the key that makes the difference. try it and see mate what you going to loose?

The chances are that the laptop serial is an OEM one, and is probably a serial that only works with the laptops manufacturers own OEM version of Vista.

You can try it, but be sure not to delete the recovery partition if there is one. But personally I wouldn't try it unless you can find info that it actually works on your laptop model.

suppose i've got the factory reset disc in case it doesn't work...

Well it would have to be after the end of may when uni finishes, as then id have a lot to loose. :D

Hmmm, that was in my thoughts, it will be an OEM version surely, just not sure if they are allowed to work.

My desktop version is a free version from Uni, can go in to their server, download Vista for free and ask IT for a key, done it for two computers getting a key off uni mate, might do it a third time. :)

The Manufactures settings on the Vista DVD are only for pre activation and have no way of stopping an install if the key is used on a different DVD.

As you said aslong as the key and dvd are both OEM or retail then there should be no problems, as i have done it many times with custoers lappys to remove all the preinstalled carp.
