My mate has a broadband usb modem and win xp. When he is setting it up it says that the modem is connected but its not. Any ideas?

USb drivers need to to be correct, modem neeeds to detect the adsl line and then needs to log on.

Recheck the password etc details

How do you know its not connected? If its just the internet and email thats not working its possible the internet browser is trying to use the wrong connection. look under internet options in the control panel and check the connection its trying to use.

Thanks, I know its not connected because its pyshically not plugged into the usb port. Yet it says it is.

What USB modem is it ? has he tried to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them. When reinstalling it is important not to plug the USB modem in until prompted on most USB modems otherwise windows will install it as an unknown device.

I would guess, he prob plugged the USB modem before the drivers.

As Homerj said,
