Windows SBS 2008 - Backup issues?

Hi guys,

I've made various other posts in this forum regarding some issues I have been having recently, I have been made administrator of my companies' IT situation, simply due to the fact that I am by far the most technically minded, despite the fact I have very little server admin experience, hence why I'm coming to you fine folks for aid.

I am currently in the process of trying to back up our server (SBS2008) using the backup tool in the SBS console.
However, when I run the tool, configure the options (what and when to back up and where to back up to) and try to backup the server, it constantly fails.

The external HDD it is trying to back it up to disappears from device manager after the backup wizard formats it and I have to plug it into a different PC to reformat it. I have literally no idea why backup keeps failing but I have tried a fair few different variables in the backup wizard and all seem to fail. Can anyone possibly shed any light on this issue?

Thanks in advanced,

Jamie

IIRC, SBS does format the external HD so it doesn't appear in "My Computer".

Anything of interest in the Event Viewer? Backup should put events in to:

Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Backup > Operational

Hmm, well this appears to be an event log of my attempt to backup earlier

any use? :P

I've just thought, could this backup issue be related to the problem I had the other day, removing MS exchange 2007 which also blitzed all the user profiles off?

But then again, long before I started, the daily tape drive backups had been failing since June, I'll stick in a screenshot of the failures.

Are you trying to backup using Backup Exec or the builtin Windows backup? Use one or the other, not both.

Whichever one it is you are using there's a VSS issue. It could be linked to the Exchange issue but as it isn't something I'd consider trying, so I don't know what else it would break.

Install and run the SBS Best Practices Analyzer and report back on anything it highlights as an issue. Don't blindly follow the advice as some of it is wrong, or can just be ignored.

There are additional manual stages that need to be completed after some Windows updates are installed (against SharePoint for example). These can cause VSS issues and will be picked up by the BPA report.

It's also worth running

vssadmin list writers

to see if it reports any problems.

I'll have a go at what you suggested mate thanks.

And also, I have tried to use both, and both have failed. Before I joined I believe they were using synmantec backupexec for the tape drive.

?

do a file copy to some other external device until you have fixed the issue

make sure the boss knows it aint working correctly and you are working on it!

I've tried to copy files to an external device, but the inside of the server is such a mess at the moment, I don't know who's saving what to where, whether they are saving locally on their HDD's or if it's going over to the server, the person who set it up before I started seems to have been on some sort of euphoria inducing hard drug, letting them not give a damn about wtf they were doing XD\

Oh and will the PSconfig in anyway risk the files? It's imperative to not lose any data

Hang on, are you backing up using BE 12.5, the SBS Console or both?

Given Vodafone had you nuke Exchange (which they want slapping for IMHO), I imagine SBS is going to be in right state :(

Yeah as I said in an above post, it's a total mess :( is anyone able to help me out with screensharing to have a look at what's going on?

Offering random strangers access to your systems could be considered a bit foolhardy. If something went wrong as a result I wouldn't want to be the one explaining it to management.

As you no longer need Exchange is there any budget to replace SBS with a nice simple vanilla version of Windows Server? It would be a lot simpler to administer.

Hmm I know what you mean, but at this point I need help pretty badly, I am trying to fix something beyond my experience level, which is why I'm asking here before I do anything and make any mistakes :P I trust the judgement of most people on here. And hmm I think we're trying to phase the server reliance out, we want individual workstations all working from SharePoint/365

I've heard about something call InTune or something from microsoft? which lets you remotely administrate individual workstations? Or was that total crap? XD

Vital user data, outlook inbox's?(thinking about it, now our MX record is set to office 365 it's all backed up on the cloud possibly?) but yeah, not a massive amount of data, but it is VITAL to the business, I'm trying to think of a temporary storage solution, there are so many random directories where people are saving documents, locally and remotely, it's such a mess
