Hi

We have an SBS2011 server and are using windows server backup which backups to an external 2TB hard drive. The problem we have is that when the hard drive fills up instead of overwriting the oldest backup all the backups get deleted and the backups start again.

What is causing this as we just want it to overwrite the oldest backups?

I think it's in the performance settings to change to incremental?
That will change the backup type, and it sounds like you should be changing the retention settings.

Really need to know the below to answer your question.

Are you always running a full backup?
How often do you run them?
How big is a full backup?
How long is the current retention?

Out of curiosity, do you have this external hard drive plugged in 24-7?

Or do you plug it in near the backup time and then unplug to take off-site?

Oops yes...
