Windows serial number

How do you find the serial number for windows xp?
My m8 has a genuine disc but carnt find the serial number he got with it and is wanting to do a format.

As in the CD Key for the currently installed one?

If so, and he can't find it on any of his documentation, then googling something like "show windows xp cd key" should find you a whole host of results with applications or methods that show you how to do it

It's just stored in a couple of files anyway, back these up, install and copy them back across.

How you install across without knowing the S/N is a different kettle of fish.
