Hoping someone can help...

Is there anyway to recover files deleted on the server by users? Say they accidentally delete a word document? Or is there some way of preventing it happening in the first place?

If I need 3rd party software, any recommendations?

Of course,

Resore the file from a backup.

Setup permissions on the folder, perhaps you only want them to read it, etc.....

Do you use Novell, Linux, or is it pure Microsoft based?

Just an NTFS partition on one Windows Server 2003 fileserver.

I don't control the backups, and it would take me days to get the backup guy to get it back. Was wondering if there was a quicker / easier solution, such as NTFS undelete or some sort of recycle-bin utility for the server.

It could be possible with a raw data recovery program, but its not fast nor easy.

I think you're best off talking to the backup guy.

When you delete items from a network share, they normally DELETE and don't go to the users recycle bin.

Backups are your only hope imo. They are priceless.

Hold on, may not need to go crawling to your backup guy.... Have you tried using the restore from the Previous Version Tab on the Folder / Map Drive?

Should have 30 day of history that you can then find the missing file and restore.

Let us know how it goes!

This will only be the case if they have volume shadow copy installed on the server and the shadow copy client rolled out to the user desktops though. I heartily recommend that you do so for future situations like this. Unfortunately standard data recovery software such as getdataback/ Norton aren't feasible for file servers due to a) the amount of read-write processes performed on a server means any deleted data is quickly overwritten on the disk b) you would have to take the server offline to do it, and it could take anything from a few hours to days.

You could also have a poke around on the server's recycle bin if you have the admin login to it. Im not entirely hopeful that it will be there but its another avenue.

Finally, have a word with your backup guy and if it is a problem you may have to throw in a few references to "service level targets" and "turnover" ;)

Good luck
