Windows Server 2003 - recycle bin on server

On my previous company network, we had a way of recovering network files deleted by users, simply by logging onto the server and browsing the recycle bin and right-clicking and 'recover'.

I've just setup a new Windows 2003 network, but it doesn't allow me to recover deleted network files.

I think it might be related to the shadow copy service, but I don't understand how this works. It's currently set to 'manual' status and I've set the settings on each drive, but still no luck, the recycle bin is only storing files deleted on the server locally.

Any ideas? Thanks!

This has always been the case. Was the previous network running on Novell Netware?

Maybe you should run the Shadow Copy Service? This is a really big system hogger so make sure you have the capacity.

Yeah you must have had some 3rd party software installed. By default if you delete something from a network drive it is gone.

This is one feature I've been crying for Microsoft to add for years.
The Novel network I used to look after some six years ago had this feature as standard and it was an absolute godsend - I just cannot believe MS haven't "borrowed" this feature yet!
