I have a server running 2003 and 3pcs on a network. At the minute all i use the server for is file storage.
What i would like to do it use the server as the main connection to the internet if it is possible. At present all pcs and the server connect directly to the internet throught my router.
I want it set up so i can have a firewall/antivirus on the server only, and the other pcs connecting to the internet through the server.

Is this possible and has anyone a guide on how to do it?

you probably should reset up the network into this configuration :
Internet - Router - Windows 2003 - hub - other compters.

in this way all the all the connections go thouht the windows 2003 server. Probably want 2 diffent NIC's.

Not really sure on what fire wall you'd use on windows 2003 though.

i have avg currently installed on the server. it has a firewall built in also
i still not sure about the configuration i want. Can it be done with the equipment i have now or will i need more network cards?

You will need some kind of proxy software to share the internet. Microsoft's proxy product is ISA 2005. Its a good idea to have 2 network cards if you can, although can be run off one.

I wouldn't recommend not having anti virus on the pc's as its possible a virus could still hit the pcs.

so if i can get isa and install it, i can get all of the pc's in my home to go through that, I am stuck with only 1 network card in each pc

You will only need two network cards in *** server. The pc's will only need one.

Yep, ISA is a proxy accelerator which will give you the facility to route internet traffic through your server.

I have a new problem, When installing isa i get an error stating that a system service cannot start, please verify priveleges. I am logged into the server remotely using an administrator account so should have full access to everything. Can anyone shed some light on this?

When you say remotely, do you mean with RDP?

Not 100% on this, but I know that using Terminal Services (old RDP) it wont let you install software.

yes i am using rdp. normally i can install anything like this.
I have read the install notes and it looks like i am doing things correctly but i am still getting the error. I will connect a monitor to the server and try installing directly

i had a loads of other errors with the server so i just reinstalled the op system. Once done isa installed correctly. I am now stuck configuring it!!
if i start it and as far as i can see set up rules to allow traffic to the internet from the seleted lan ip addys i cannot connect to the internet on the server at all
