Morning,

We're trying to work out if 2008 R2 requires SP2 because we've downloaded the official ISO from Microsoft and it won't install, tells us it's not applicable to our current version of Windows.

I realise 2008 came with 'SP1' from the printers but what of SP2, does R2 include all the updates and therefore negate it i.e. is SP2 for the none R2 version 2008?

For ref these are 64bit 2008 Standard Servers we're working on.

Thanks in advance!

There is no service pack for Windows Server 2008 R2. The service pack is for the Server 2008 editions.

Thanks :)

Just found this buried on Technet:

Are Windows Server 2008 R2 and SP2 the same?

No, Windows Server 2008 R2 is the next release of Windows Server. SP2 is a service pack for the current version of Windows 2008 Server.

Does Windows Server 2008 SP2 change the non-Windows Server 2008 R2 machines to Windows Server 2008 R2 SP2 machines?
No, it will not upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2.

Can Windows Server 2008 SP2 be applied to a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine?
No.
