Windows Server 2012 Server Backup error

hi all,

I've got several 2008 and a few 2012 servers.

I've been using a netgear readynas 314 to store the windows backups images that get generated each night by each server.

On the 2008 side, all is working perfectly.

If i try to backup a 2012 machine (system state) to a local disk it works perfectly.

If i try to do the same backup again to the nas if fails with the error;

'Backup failed to complete. There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes backup set. Incorrect Function.'

whats strange is the error seems to imply that it can't create/read/write a VSS shapshot of it's self. which is odd as it works locally.

Oh, and yes the credentials uses to access the nas have full read & write permissions.

Anyone got any ideas?

I have a ticket open with Netgear, but have no response as of yet.

Is this the error you get within the event log? I would check the event log for some more details.

Check the vss writers as well

"vssadmin list writers" check is these all look good.

Is this from starting a fresh backup directly to the NAS device?

More information needed

The error in the event log is more misleading than the error given in the backup application it's self.

vssadmin shows all writers are working ok.

As i stated above the backup works fine when done to a local drive. it's saving it to a network location that fails.

And yes, I'm deleting the old failed files from the nas before stating another backup test.

does your NAS support SMB 3.0?

eye, readynas 314 on lastest firmware (6.1.1) smb version 4 which includes smb 3.

I even tried forcing all clients to use smb3 but that didn't work either

thats ok, i thank you for your time anyways.

I actually have two server that this is happening on, however both are vm on the same host.

I'll see if i can build a server on some real hardware and test.
