Hi all,

I'm running windows 2008 r2 and have been doing a windows server back for a while now.

In en effort to reduce the space used I went to reconfigure it but discovered that the option i need 'Bare Metal Recovery' is including my 2nd HDD (D:\).

This is causing the backups to be over a TB in size which is stupid as the data on the D:\ is backup with backup exec anyhow.

Any thought on to why the bare metel option is including the D drive and what I can do to stop it doing so?

thanks in advance

oh, could it be because I have my WSUS and WDS data stored on there? As a domain controller with these roles enabled I assume it'll need that data to be able to recover?

Bare metal restore is used to replace your system with an entirely new piece of hardware.
It's like taking an image of your machine, you need to backup everything d:\ included if you want to be able to restore it!

that's just it, i don't want to restore the d drive if a recovery was required. maybe it's existence but certainly not the data on it.

is there anyway to exclude it?

well, for anyone else who finds this..

I managed to move the WSUS data with wsusutil and I also moved the WDS content off my D drive.

This now allows me to do a bare metal backup without having the D drive selected.

Problem solved.
