Windows Server Essentials 2016 backup failing

Backups on my WSE 2016 box have started to fail at 66%. The error is

The scheduled backup did not finish successfully and returned the following error code: 2147942403

Searching brought up a couple of threads from 2014 which indicated a failure of the backup medium - an external USB HDD - so I replaced it and got the same message.

WSE 2016 is fully patched. I've run a check on the drives - no fauilts found.

Any ideas?

Install Veeam Endpoint Backup.

No good for backing up AD though.

FWIW I re-setup the backup on the new external drive and it rapidly got to 66% and over the next few days gradually got to 100%.
