I have two questions about CAL licensing for Windows client & server.
We bought Windows Server 2003 + 15 user CAL's when we actually meant to buy Windows Small Business Server 2003 + 15 user CAL's. We are going to get rid of the copy of Server 2003. Can the CAL's purchased for Server 2003 be used for Small Business Server 2003 instead, or do we have to purchase 15 CAL's of a different type?
Also, if we have two servers in a network, do we need to have 15 CAL's for one server and another 15 CAL's for the other server?

You will need to purchase sbs cals for your sbs as they have the sql and exchange licenses. They are significantly more expensive.

You can buy user or device cals and you require 1 cal for every user/device that accesses the server (depending on the licensing mode you are using).

Thanks for that. Very difficult to find info on such things. Are there then separate licenses for SBS Standard and SBS Premium, given that Premium provides the additional SQL and ISA Server services?

Also, to repeat my original question, will I need a set of 15 CAL's for the first server and another 15 CAL's for the second server?

its the same cal for standard and premium

and you need a cal for each user/device that is accessing the server so if you have 15 simultanious conections to both servers then you need 15 cals on each server

Just read this from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/licensing.mspx:
Q. I want to have additional servers running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 on my SBS 2003 R2 domain. Do my users need CALs to access those servers?

A. No. Your SBS 2003 R2 CALs allow your users to access any additional servers running Windows Server software in the domain. You do not need to buy additional CALs for file and print services, or to access additional servers running Exchange Server 2003 or SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. However, you will need to purchase Terminal Server CALs if you have a server running Terminal Services in application mode on your network.
