in our flat we have a central windows pc, used for filesharing between us, we have 2 other pc's and 4 macs, the boys who own the macs only really know how to use editing software, and dont know how to configure anything..

i've never really used a mac either, but i had windows shares working fine on their macs by doing.. finder, go, connect to server
then it'd add password to a keychain

one of the macs has stopped working (after months of working fine), it can view the other macs, and other windows shares (from different pc's) just fine, but when i try to connect it to my original server, it says "recieved no response from 'pcname'"

what can i do to trouble shoot on the mac? -no changes were made to the pc or hardware/network side

i've tried deleting the keychain, but that didn't work

what else can i try?

-also (could be related) the mac shows up in 'workgroup', wheras the pc's are all in mshome -how do you change this on a mac? -this is under the network screen

please bear in mind, i dont have a clue when it comes to macs..

ooh and the mac firewall is off

sharing files between the two OS' can be a hassle, have you checked:

system preferences -> sharing -> services tab and checked which boxes are ticked

might be a silly question, but is the windows firewall off ?
helped me connect my mac to windows pc once!

not an option..

i'll try disabling it to see if it fixes it, but i need it on ultimatly, the other macs see it fine, which is annoying me

the mouse movement is getting to me already
