just built a decent pc build for my cousin

e7400
asus p5q-e
collermaster silent pro 700w
xfx 4870
500gb hdd
antec 900-2 case
2gb ocz ram

everything installed fine and runs nicely, but when i turn the fans up to full speed and switch on the cold cathodes, windows comes up with an error message saying its shutting down to protect its self, or something like that

but it runs smoothly without on of the fans at full speed and the cathodes off

the only thing i can think of is that the mobo is shutting down because it thinks there a power loss to the board...i don't know though im not good with voltages ect lol

Hmm, normally I'd expect a 700W PSU to manage it, but perhaps whichever rail it is you're using can't supply enough current (ampz). An i7 with a 4870x2 will be drawing a lot of current through your 12v rail(s).

I'm not knowledgeable enough with PSU's, rails and all that jargon, so I'll have to gracefully bow out here - I think the solution may just be to take the cathodes out though ;)

Edit: confusing your rig with your cousins - an E74 and single 4870 shouldn't be drawing that much power/current! What's the amp'age on the 12v?

Hmm, now I'm lost. I would've thought that it's a problem with multple 12v rails, big power (wattage) but not enough amps (ie you were trying to draw from the same rail as CPU/GPU and it couldn't handle it.

50A though, that's enough to fry a yak, it should be more than enough!

Check all the cathodes are wired up correctly, and if u can remove all the cathodes and wires connected to them and re connect them all back making sure you dont make any mistakes.

Hope this helps!
