To get the SMP client to run on my home windows XP PC I have to use an account with a password. Fine, but that means I have to enable the password protection on my PC user. Problem is that results in the windows logon screen appearing at any reboot. As it was only me using the PC, I never bothered with the user password bit.

Anyone know of a way of getting the SMP running without the user password details, or alternatively a way of getting the PC to boot straight to the users's desktop bypassing the password need?

It's hurting my WUage (is that a word) at the moment 'cos if the PC crashes (it does this occasionally for reason unknown) it sits idle until I get home to find it again. That's not good for my plans to keep Mr Lemonman in his place :p

This is what I did, found it on a forum somewhere:

Click Start > Run
Type "control userpasswords2"
Deselect "users must enter a username and password..."

(edit) Argh, beaten :p

Thanks for the suggestions.

Me thnks there is a good chance I'm going to break something tonight. Fiddling with something that sort of works, always makes things worse :(

Would it work to create a second user account on the machine and make the smpd service run under it instead? That way you could have your own account set to auto-login and have no password but the service's needs would be satisfied.

EDIT: Heck, you are forced to have an Administrator account on Windows XP. Why not make that the host user for the service?

It is an admin level account being used on Windoze at the moment, just doesn't want to auto login on the current settings. Bear in mind the home PC is just the standard not pro Win XP.

I haven't had the Win SMP client running sucessfully yet on the home PC, so it relies on the PC desktop going live, for the SMP client to run from a shortcut in the startup menu list.
