I've had this problem for quite some time now, and have gone thorugh google hundreds of times, without luck :(
Suddenly struck me taht I could post here about it, so here it is.

Some of the sound in windows just randomly disappears, for no reason i can think off. Years ago, this used to happen quite a bit and I noticed it didn't when some sound was actually playing so I started keeping winamp on constantly and taht seemed to work. Then some time ago, that stopped working and sound stopped in winamp too. I had no idea what was wrong since winamp wouldn't play the file, there would be no sound if somoen in msn logged in or said something etc, but mplayer2 would play it or the sound in games would still be there.
Now its become taht winamp will play, most games will play, but the msn sounds are gone. And i've noticed that when im playing red alert 2 the sound in that disappears largely as well. I have no idea whatsoever what's wrong because sound is still there. Winamp plays a file, but msn doesn't and ra2 doesn't, even though most games do.

This problem is always fixed if i simply log off and log back on or reboot.

It's not a major issue, but an annoyance that's been bothering me for some time now.

I'm on windows 2000, P4 2.0ghz. Intel D850MV motherboard and onboard sound.
Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated :)

Maybe a virus?
Maybe the bios is corrupted somehow, you may consider removing the MB battery for 30 minuets or resetting the jumpers to reset the bios to default.
Just a shot in the dark.

good luck

defintley not a virus. I've re-installed windows and done complete format's many times.
As for the latter, sorry, no idea how to do that. I'm willing to try it if it'l help though. Any advice on how to go about it?

I've updated drivers, didn't help :(
