Windows speed

hijackthis

look for that on majorgeeks.com

then paste the log into.. www.hijackthis.de

it'll tell you what each thing is, just disable everything you don't need

also, download ccleaner (lite), run the cleaner and do a defrag

disable system restore

download regseeker and do a full registry scan, and remove all green + red entires

(after regseeker) use ntregopt to shrink registry size (sort of like defrags it)

create a new user account and use that instead (mydocuments and desktop will need to be copied across)

update drivers for your hardware

remove all unneeded things from add/remove programs

disable services you don't need (services.msc)

uninstall windowsdefender or any other antispyware programs that constantly run..

if you have xpsp2 and a router, then uninstall antivirus (just don't visit any silly websites)

these three are a bit more drastic
reinstall xp
get more ram
get faster hard drive

offloading the pagefile to a 2nd hdd and getting 2gb ram helped my windows boot and work much faster :)

Does this really help? And how come?!
-creating a new user account

sure it helps, it won't have any of the CURRENT_USER\Run entries, and should be a pretty plain account -with shortcuts to programs you've got installed for allusers in the start menu etc

quite often a good way of stopping strange problems that users experience are to create a new local account for them on their machine

the uphclean tool is good for keeping accounts in tact too

this is a good tool for seeing what is taking the longest to load, but windows runs the optimisations that bootvis does itself every few days anyway
