Hello all,

I am/was running windows xp pro x64 on my pc. I restarted my PC one day, usually hibernating normally, to my horror device manager was blank and the system wanted me to reactivate it.

I figured that I'd messed up the registry while trying to get rid of some stubborn programs and only realised after I restarted.

Anyway, windows reactivated itself but still device manager wouldn't show properly. I found a forum that said for xp pro x64 you can just run an upgrade install (no need to loose settings/data) and that would fix the problem, so I did...

That's where the fun started.

The setup ran well until it actually got to installing windows where it just stopped on 39 minutes remaining. I booted up with the XP CD but I couldn't kill the installation.

I can't boot into windows properly, I only ever get the upgrade installer trying to run and freezing.

What would be the most sensible route to take now?

Should I make a new partition and install windows on that, would I have to format or would it just be grabbed from the freespace? What's the best way of going about things that will allow me to keep my data?

I'm not worried about having to reinstall programs, I'd like a clean start but I need my data (which ought to still be there, just that windows isn't)

Could I boot up with a USB device running windows?

Please could you help me as I need a solution soon as I start college on Monday and I need to use it!

Thank you so much

get the data off and format, best option..

get a spare hard drive for emergencies that has xp installed on it, so you can put it in a boot that if you ever REALLY need to use your pc
