I've recently been having problems with my Windows, the main problem is it hangs on the Starting Windows screen, hard drive activity is noticed and then just stops completely.

now before you tell me to use search forums or google, I've already done that.

Things I've tried:

I've tried going into Startup repair and also safe mode, it loads for a while but then hangs aswell after loading in a background picture, keyboard and mouse and i can just bash buttons and wont respond.

Reset bios/clearing CMOS -no change

Rebooting multiple times - no changes

Removing all the excessive things that are plugged in.

Removed a stick of ram - no change

Any help is appreciated, i need my PC ASAP to finish my final year project :(

First step is to make a backup of anything important. The easiest option is to create a Linux Live CD [Linux Mint or Ubuntu will do], boot from the CD and then copy anything important to a USB HDD or network location.

Next find your Windows DVD and boot from that. There should be an option to do a repair install if you follow the setup wizard. The repair install replaces all system files and settings. This is usually a safe operation and does not delete or remove personal files or software - but it is prudent to have a backup in any case.

Once done see if your installation works.

I took out my secondary hard drive and it booted up, so I tested it by re-inserting which failed to boot again so at first I thought it was my hard drive failing. but it turns out it was the SATA cable, it booted fine with a different cable  so i guess thats it sorted for now. Will find my Win7 DVD and do a repair on it anyway just to make sure. Thanks :D
