Windows Store Games won't have VSync, SLI/CrossFire, Fullscreen or Modding


Microsoft is looking to cut itself a lion's share of the game digital downloads pie, by making Microsoft Store (which comes included with Windows 10), sell contemporary AAA games, such as "Rise of the Tomb Raider." Unlike other cross-DRM transactions (eg: purchasing a Steam DLC game through UPlay store), Microsoft Store will serve both sales and DRM roles. You must be thinking "it's a free world, always room for more competition," right? Think again. There are several pitfallls to buying "Rise of the Tomb Raider" or any other AAA game through Microsoft Store, as users on Reddit found out.

To begin with, games purchased through Windows Store are built on Microsoft's Universal Apps Platform, and not the conventional desktop-based executable. The game is essentially a "modern UI" app, and not a conventional Windows application. This has great limitations - no NVIDIA SLI or AMD CrossFire support; no real fullscreen mode (just borderless windowed mode or pseudo-fullscreen); and V-sync being always-on. Other major downsides of UAP apps include no support for modding, and mouse macros. What's more, since UAP apps don't have *.exe extensions, you can't add them to Steam, and so no Steam Controller support. The Store in itself doesn't have a good refund policy along the lines of Steam and Origin limited full-refund policies; and you'll never be able to play your games on Windows versions older than Windows 10.

If FreeSync doesn't work in windowed mode, you can add that to the list too.

MS just can't help themselves reminding us PC gaming is under XBone as far as they are concerned, too much coin in console.:(
 
DX12 FS (at a guess)might be run windowed the same as mgpu can, (could be wrong here)but I believe in DX11, AMD implement FS across the board and not on a game per game basis(which Nv do), ROTTR IS DX11 though, will AMD be left with the choice of informing FS customers not to purchase via W10 store?:eek:

Is the FS DX12 implementation the same or does FS support need to be included by the vendor or on the driver side?

Something for AMD to explain, maybe Nv too if they are affected or not.

Can't say Iv'e had any gripes with 7/8.1 or 10, didn't like the tiles on 8 though and kept using Start8 until W10.

Microsofts responds to Tim Sweeney

In response to Sweeney’s allegations, Kevin Gallo, corporate vice president of Windows at Microsoft, told the Guardian: “The Universal Windows Platform is a fully open ecosystem, available to every developer, that can be supported by any store. We continue to make improvements for developers; for example, in the Windows 10 November Update, we enabled people to easily side-load apps by default, with no UX required.

“We want to make Windows the best development platform regardless of technologies used, and offer tools to help developers with existing code bases of HTML/JavaScript, .NET and Win32, C+ + and Objective-C bring their code to Windows, and integrate UWP capabilities. With Xamarin, UWP developers can not only reach all Windows 10 devices, but they can now use a large percentage of their C# code to deliver a fully native mobile app experiences for iOS and Android. We also posted a blog on our development tools recently.”
