windows suddenly deciding it is not genuine- what is the difference?

...soooo...because i changed my motherboard, i can't have a 'licensed' copy anymore? that's a strange setup.

from MS

The OEM software is licensed with the computer system on which it was originally installed and is tied to that original machine. OEM licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be installed on more than one computer system, even if the original machine is no longer in use. The Microsoft Software License Terms, which the end user must accept before using the software, state that the license may not be shared, transferred to, or used concurrently on different computers.

OEM license is tied to the motherboard it was first activated /installed on, if you change your board then a new license is required - this has always been the same for OEM versions on XP, Vista and Windows 7, Retail versions allow you to change license between motherboards / systems belongs you uninstall it form the previous version.

Windows 8 is slightly different as they don't have a retail version and the OEMlicense can changed between boards.

gooood damn it. i was always under the impression it was the hard drive it was connected to, not the motherboard. i can't believe there is something preferable about win8. oh well. guess i'll just keep ignoring those popups.

thanks anyway.

That's win8 OEM purchased from a shop.

Preinstalled win8 on things like hp. dell etc, are still tied to the machine.

However you can change hobo if it breaks. So you should still be able to phone up Ms and do what you need to be put through to an operator to explain. It's meant to be like for like. But I doubt they'll ask to much.
