Hi guys, my work has around 140 pc's all sharing a 2mb internet connection, at the moment updates are rarely, normally when a IT goes to the PC they will set the pc downloading the latest updates.

This is a strain on the connection so we want to set up windowssus.

I was just wondering how do the client machines connect to the get the updates?

I guess it's via a web interface? I left the SUS server syncing 8000 odd updates before we leftfor the day.

You dont use the web interface mate. You set up local or group policy for windows update. All the docs are on the MS site. I found setting it up extremely easy and my background is in Cisco not MS.

It is basically changing where windows update looks for its updates from (i.e. currently it looks at update.microsoft.com and you change it to look at http://server01.yourdomain.net) which can either be done by group policy or manually.

The server setup is easy however if you're not careful it'll download every patch known to man so you have to be selective and you need to be very selective on how it runs - i.e. does it download every patch and then deploys them or do you want to manually deploy them?

Anyway its very easy to install and setup which is good news... :)
