Windows Temp Folder eating up my storage space

I have a weird problem where my Windows Temp folder seems to fill up overnight.

I should have about 50Gb free on my SSD but today when I turned the computer on, the disk was highlighted red, indicating I had very little storage left. I can go into settings and delete Temp files from the Storage settings but even after trying out a possible solution I came across last week relating to an error with the Windows Store App, the problem continues.

Has anyone come across this before and found a solution?

Thanks.

I don't use Windows much now. But what might help others diag ose it would be whether there are any specific filenames that are being created ir any soecific tinestamps that indicate when they are.

Well, I installed CCleaner yesterday and deleted a whole load of stuff, over 29GB and the problem hasn't reoccurred since. Not sure how that has resolved things for now but I'll keep an eye on it.

I did run Disk Cleanup last week and it did remove about 10 gigs of stuff but the problem still continued.

Try moving the pagefile to another drive - leave a 2 MB pagefile on C: - and disable hibernation. That should free 32 GB.

With 16 GB RAM you don't really need a page file if you're a gamer. So the 16 GB or so that Windows sets aside for the page file might as well be on your large HDD and not on your small SSD. You absolutely need a small page file on the SSD for debugging purposes. 2 MB is the minimum, but you could put it at 1 GB. Of course, the downside is that if you do actually use more than 16 GB RAM your slowdown will be even more dramatic.

Windows auto managed pagefile is generally sub-optimal - stick it on one drive with minimum (initial size) 1024MB and then max size depending on your usage and amount of RAM but normally around 8192MB is fine unless a power user - putting max size higher doesn't really hurt though. Less than 1024MB will cause issues in certain cases i.e. debug dumps where the OS is in a state where it can't adjust the size of the pagefile but needs to write out a lot of information for proper operation.

I've got 16GB of RAM and my current Windows-managed pagefile is 2.5GB. Unless it's absolutely massive for some reason I'd just be leaving it as-is, people used to faff with the pagefile sizes on HDDs to reduce fragmentation but that's not an issue on SSDs and I wouldn't be moving anything system-related to a HDD.

Also look out for Swapfile.sys.

On my system, Hiberfil.sys uses 13 GB, Pagefile.sys uses 10 GB, and Swapfile.sys uses 16 MB. That's 24 GB wasted. Okay, I've got a 1 TB SSD but it's still 24 GB.

have you used a search tool to identify all the big files created recently ? I use freecommander

Windows auto managed pagefile is generally sub-optimal
why do you say that ? it's has saved my bacon, where programs unintentionally grew to use a lot of swap, it does not seem to go into long pauses if it has to grab more either,
maybe the lack of contiguous space is less efficient, but especially on an ssd would that matter.?

and disable hibernation.
hibernate can be useful if your laptop battery runs down, you forget to plug it, as it will autosave state

No I never had Windows temp folder filled up overnight to run almost out of storage space before but I had broken Windows Store app twice years ago.

Try open Apps and Features and type in Store and Microsoft Store app show up on list then click on it and click on Advanced options, scroll down to bottom and you will see Reset button, click it and Windows 10 will reinstall Microsoft Store and reset Store settings to default.

Hope you will not have Windows temp folder fill up again as Microsoft Store app should working properly with no further errors.

Thank you everyone for your input and advice.

I used CCleaner to have a look at what is taking up space.

There are dozens of prb.tmp files, all of which measure 1579KB in size.

I'm not sure what prb files relate to.

Not AVG but the most recent software I installed is the Avast free antivirus.

I don't have Sharepoint running although I know we use that at work and I would log in to check emails etc. from home.
