I am using a Dell C640 laptop. The touchpad and left-click were performing normally before a recent visit to Windows Update. Now left click will not function, nor does tapping the touchpad, however it is possible move the cursor and right-click performs normally.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers.

Any ideas? I am having to resort to using a PS/2 mouse at present.

I cannot see how this is a Windows Update problem unless there was drivers on the Update. In which case just uninstall the Microsoft Update drivers for your mouse.

You sure you havn't turned it off by accident using short cut keys? I used to do that loads of times when switching the screen off. I know it sounds retarted, but it does happen :)

No this was an issue previously. So I decided to try a clean install of Windows and it resolved the issue.

Then immediately after applying updates from Windows it broke again. (I believe it was only security updates.)

There is also a post from a Dell Inspiron laptop user on the support forums at Dell reporting the same issue as well. This is from 25/01/2006.

So something must be amiss.
